A Hidden Mountain

A Hidden Mountain

If the mountain can be hidden by lofty peaks;
And the peaks, shrouded by a ring of hills.

If the hills can be hidden by a forest of trees;
And the trees, concealed by a rising crest.

If the crest can be hidden by a tuft of tall grass;
And the grass, buried in the shadow of a dune.

If the dune can be hidden by a tangle of weeds;
And the weeds, covered by the sweeping sands.

If the sands can be lost in anonymity,
Then a single grain can hide a mountain.

And if the greatness of a mountain
Can so easily be obscured by a thing so small,

Then how can we be surprised,
When a single unquestioned thought eclipses
The dazzling scale of our own inner heights?
